Mission - Why We Need You

Founded in 1980, SMA Technologies provides intelligent automation solutions with purpose-built integrations for financial institutions. We are banking experts, who make complex simple, and own our customers' outcomes. This reflects who we are, how we work, and the community we are building together. Be the driving force behind innovation – join us on our mission to shape the future as our Senior Accountant!

What You’ll Accomplish

Make your mark in a role where your impact powers real change. As our Senior Accountant, you’ll work side-by-side with our Controller to lead scalable transformation — optimizing processes and embracing automation to elevate our accounting operations. You will leverage AI and automation tools to enhance the accuracy, speed, and strategic value of financial processes.

This isn’t just a position — it’s a chance to be part of a high-velocity journey that fuels both your development and our momentum. At SMA, we believe in building boldly and investing in our people every step of the way. If you're ready to be the spark behind innovation and help shape what’s next, your journey starts here.

How You’ll Get There

In your first 30 days, you will acclimate yourself to all things SMA and begin providing support to the team:

  • Get to know your teammates and all stakeholders in SMA’s accounting processes.
  • Get acquainted with SMA’s various IT accounting systems used to support the business.
  • Become familiar with our general ledger by processing critical account reconciliations that are assigned to you.
  • Get comfortable with SMA’s sales tax filing footprint and monthly process.
  • Go through your first accounting close by processing specific journal entries assigned to you.

In the next 90 days, you will take ownership of your assigned tasks under the guidance of the controller:

  • Have a solid understanding of the accounting close process and take ownership of the remaining journal entries that are assigned to you.
  • Begin adding the account recs that are deemed non-critical. Work with the controller to set up a tracking mechanism to ensure completeness and develop a reporting cadence to reduce the monthly workload.
  • Work with controller to identify opportunities for AI automation in our processes.
  • Take full ownership of the SMA sales tax automated filing process, including developing tools to reconcile our filings to SMA accounting subledgers and track all activity to ensure timeliness and completeness.
  • Work with controller to provide support to SMA’s external partners used for state and federal tax filings – both quarterly and annual.

After 6 months, you will almost be a subject matter expert in the areas assigned to you. You will start to think about how to improve on the processes you own:

  • Take the lead in running the monthly close process. Start assessing each step in the process and make recommendations for areas to add efficiencies.
  • Work with controller to streamline quarterly/year-end GAAP adjustment processes, including ASC606 revenue recognition.
  • Using AI powered tools, consider/implement automating repetitive tasks, forecasting and financial planning, anomaly and fraud detection in transactions and payments, auto-tag supporting documentation
  • Help with the year-end close to ensure timely reporting and audit readiness.
  • Be a key participant in preparation for the annual audit, through the creation of various account reconciliation roll-ups and related PBC schedules.

Competencies - What We're Looking For

Relentless Optimizer: You’re wired to challenge the status quo. “There has to be a better way” isn’t just a phrase — it’s your mindset. You spot inefficiencies before others notice them and take pride in transforming processes using AI automation tools for the better.

Excel & ERP Power User: You’ve moved well beyond VLOOKUPs and pivot tables — Excel is your playground. You’re also intrigued by how systems work under the hood and love decoding data flows. Bonus points if you’ve wrangled NetSuite in the past.

Close Cycle Veteran: Month-end close? You’ve seen it all. You know the drill, understand the pressure, and thrive in being the go-to person when someone says, “Can you help me figure this out?”

Agile & Growth-Ready: You’re energized by change and love the thrill of helping a growing company scale. Ambiguity doesn’t scare you — it inspires you to step up, take initiative, and adapt on the fly.

Magnetic Team Player: You bring more than just skills — you bring energy. People seek you out because you’re collaborative, humble, and just fun to work with. You invest in your teammates, and it shows.

Self-Starter with a Finish Line Focus: You deliver. Period. Remote work doesn’t faze you — you stay on track, own your outcomes (including the stumbles), and push projects across the finish line with confidence and integrity.
