Product Owner (SaaS Software)

Founded in 1980, SMA Technologies specializes in automation and analytics software solutions. Our products support the automation of companies most complex workflows and keep their human capital focused on the strategic work that moves their business forward. As we grow, we are looking for a tenacious and collaborative Product Owner to become a critical member of our Product Management team.

Objectives – The Problems You’ll Solve

Reporting to the VP of Product, the Product Owner will ensure that our products deliver measurable value to customers and the business by managing and prioritizing the product backlog and translating business needs into product requirements. This role will work closely with the Product Manager, Engineering, UX, and stakeholders converting strategy into execution. The PO will play a key role in ensuring backlog epics and stories are well-defined, technically feasible, and aligned with business goals.

How You'll Get There

Within your first 3 months:

  • Familiarize yourself with our products.

  • Meet with key stakeholders across Sales, Customer Success, and Engineering to understand product needs and challenges.

  • Take ownership of the product backlog, ensuring that epics and user stories are clear, actionable, and prioritized.

  • Work with UX and Engineering to refine existing requirements and ensure backlog readiness for sprints.

  • Conduct customer interviews and analyze feedback to refine product execution.

  • Partner with Marketing and Sales to understand how product features align with customer needs and the buyer journey.

Within your first 6 months:

  • Be able to speak confidently about the roadmap, backlog priorities, and product execution strategy.

  • Improve backlog clarity, structure, and prioritization, ensuring high-impact features are addressed first.

  • Actively partner with Sales, Customer Success, and the Voice of Customer (VOC) team to ensure that feature development aligns with real customer needs.

  • Use existing processed to track velocity, feature adoption, and backlog health.

  • Work with Engineering to refine acceptance criteria and technical feasibility for new feature requests.

Within your first 12 months:

  • Own and maintain the forward-looking backlog and execution methodology for the product.

  • Drive backlog replenishment and ensure cross-functional alignment on feature execution.

  • Partner with Design and Engineering to propose new functionality and workflow optimizations.

  • Improve time-to-value by ensuring smooth and efficient sprint planning, execution, and delivery.

  • Contribute to process improvements that enhance team efficiency and backlog management.

Competencies – What we’re looking for

Execution-Focused: You thrive in Agile environments and are passionate about backlog management. You excel at breaking down complex problems into clear, executable stories that Engineering can deliver.

Strategic Alignment & Prioritization: You have experience balancing short-term tactical needs with long-term product vision. You ensure that backlog priorities reflect business goals, customer feedback, and technical feasibility.

Customer-Centric & Research-Driven: You leverage customer insights, market research, and analytics to refine requirements. You work closely with Product Managers and stakeholders to ensure backlog items solve real user problems.

Clear & Concise Communication: You can translate business needs into technical requirements, ensuring that Engineering and stakeholders understand the why behind each story.

Collaboration & Cross-Functional Influence: You are a strong facilitator, working closely with Engineering, UX, and any Business teams to ensure smooth execution. You keep teams aligned and ensure transparency in decision-making.

Accountability & Ownership: You take ownership of the backlog and execution process, proactively refining and prioritizing to maximize impact. You ensure delivery deadlines are met, and blockers are resolved efficiently.

Process-Oriented: You are comfortable with Agile workflows (Scrum, Kanban) and continuously seek ways to improve team efficiency and sprint execution.
